Chapter 16

: The Cure

The WakMart felt completely alien. Not just strange by being virtually unchanged since the White Light, but the emptiness felt creepy. Like a haunted house. The lights were on, and the doors slid open as they walked up. The canned music was still playing faintly.

“This is fucking weird,” Carmen said, staring around. “Seriously?”

“Well, most of my gear got lost in a fire. You have a better suggestion to find all the things we need in one place?”

“Guess not.”

Once inside, they split up. The empty store wasn’t completely untouched. Some of the fluorescent lights were dead or flickering. There were some overturned shopping carts and displays. The air smelled faintly of rot and spilled bottles from the cleaning products aisle. Scavengers had been at the place, but it wasn’t too badly stripped.

He started in the camping section, picking up a store-brand backpack that was miles of improvement over the cheap school bag he’d scavenged. Chemical lights, lantern, a pair of fixed-blade knives and some decent moisture-wicking clothes. A lot of the food was ruined but he still found some calorie-dense bags of trail mix, packs of dried jerky, protein bars and such. Eventually the shelf-life of this sort of thing was going to run out, and for a moment he imagined living on a quiet farm somewhere in the country, surrounded by corn and peas and fresh strawberries and potatoes. He wasn’t sure how much of a farmer he’d be…

He made a last sweep, trying to spot where the girls had got to. Picked up a pair of heavy padded gloves from the hardware section, and a roll of Monkey-Grip tape; that stuff had a million uses. There were even a few guns left in the sporting goods section, but they were tin-can-plinkers except for a couple shotguns. Out of nostalgia he picked up a .12 gauge with a box of shells. What was more interesting were the handheld bear-bangers and emergency flares; those might actually come in handy against some of the animals they’d run into.

Laden with a backpack full of things he might not need, he navigated the maze of aisles until he reached the women’s clothing section. Spotted Carmen first, stuffing a dozen pairs of lacey panties into her bag.

She jolted guiltily then gave him a shrug.

“Really?” he asked.

“You see many working laundromats around?” the hellhound asked. “Girl has to stay fresh.”

“Well, if you’re done maybe you can check the grocery section for something we can cook.”

“Sure thing, boss,” she nodded.

As she moved off, Jeff watched her go. She reminded him a bit of Morgan, but he couldn’t get over the feeling there was something dark buried under her casual exterior. Not exactly dangerous… but…

Ah well, everyone had some buried trauma these days.

He pushed on and not far away he found the ghostly white figure of Vicky standing among the summer dresses and beachwear. She hadn’t noticed him yet, and she was holding up a sundress on a hanger, eyeing it sadly, fingers grazing over the fabric that went stiff and froze as she touched it.
